Andalucía, a comienzos del siglo XIII. Una familia de origen muladí, los Banu Quzman, vive afincada en Sherish
Shiduna (la actual Jerez de la Frontera) desde hace muchas generaciones. Sus miembros varones se dedican,
principalmente, al ejercicio del Derecho, ocupando el cargo de cadí mayor de la ciudad con carácter hereditario. La
vida discurre, con sus afanes y alegrías, de la misma manera desde hace siglos; pero pronto, todo va a cambiar.
Desde la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa los andalusíes asisten a una marea lenta pero imparable: la conquista castellana
de sus tierras. Poco a poco, las tropas del rey Fernando van tomando una villa tras otra. En muchos casos, los habitantes
musulmanes se rinden sin lucha y pueden conservar sus vidas y sus bienes, permaneciendo en sus lares cuando se
someten a la soberanía de Castilla, bajo su propio fuero y costumbres. Pero las ciudades que se resisten deben afrontar
las consecuencias habituales: los supervivientes son esclavizados, pierden sus posesiones y sus tierras, y las casas se
reparten entre los vencedores.
Con los cristianos cada vez más cerca de Sherish, las dudas sobre el destino de la familia se acrecientan. Los Banu
Quzman asisten asustados a los acontecimientos, haciéndose las mismas preguntas que todas las familias andalusíes: ¿es
preciso luchar hasta el final, aún a riesgo de perderlo todo, o mejor someterse a vasallaje? ¿Qué será de los hijos si
Sherish cae en manos de Castilla? ¿No es mejor emigrar a África y conservar, al menos, parte de la riqueza? ¿Es
admisible para un musulmán vivir sometido a la soberanía de un rey cristiano? En el seno del clan familiar, los dos
hermanos, Muhammad y Hamet, siguen caminos dispares. El primogénito elige la senda de la guerra y participa en la
resistencia contra la conquista. El segundo, Hamet, opta por llegar a acuerdos con los castellanos, pero en la constante
